Description :
  • Supervise and evaluate staff in multiple disciplines of traffic engineering and technician work from simple to complex traffic engineering functions. (scheduling, performance evaluations, discipline, and training)
  • Sets work priorities, procedures, planning, organizing, and assisting as necessary.
  • Responsible for the quantity and quality of products generated by the office.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to the staff in the office, and ensures their work is in accordance with the goals and objectives of the County and Public Works.
  • Ensures that staff are properly trained and kept current on trending technologies in the field of traffic engineering.
  • Establish and monitor employee performance expectations, provide feedback on goals, and support employee development opportunities
  • Ensures that staff have adequate materials and equipment to do the myriad of tasks required of the shop.
  • Leads the process in the selection of new employees.
  • Instill a positive culture and a team environment.
  • Responsible for traffic activities including operations planning, system review, and roadway safety evaluation.
  • Ensures that county roads are in strict compliance with all traffic standards outlined in several guidance documents and manuals.
  • Staff and incumbent configure and operate sophisticated models to evaluate county road systems for current and future conditions.
  • Work requires advanced skills including, preparation and production of specialized design reports, review of construction plan sets, working drawings, specifications, quantities, and cost estimates.
  • Acts as a technical resource and coordinates with other sections, diversions, departments and other outside agencies and consultants.
  • Prepares traffic reports, studies and investigations in support of capital projects, investigations, other improvements and developments.
  • Ensures that all the proper studies or investigations are completed for any new traffic control device.
  • Makes recommendations on requests for new devices from other departments, agencies and the public.
  • Prepares documentation on warrants and justification for all signs, signals, and other traffic control devices.
  • Responsible for the periodic preparation of the roadway safety report and intersection level of service report.
  • Develops the framework and ensures the content of the safety report that drives a big part of our Transportation Improvement Program.
  • Recommends, supports, and defends projects that will improve safety on county roads.
  • Evaluates all roadway safety features and insures proper installations.
  • Ensures that both programmed and requested traffic counts are accomplished in a timely manner, and results and reports are properly handled.
  • Ensures that all safety improvements are completed according to specifications.
  • Develops and designs safety projects for completion with safety grant and county safety funds.
  • Evaluates all roadway safety features and insures proper installations.
  • Acts as technical liaison to represent the needs of Public Works during the Department of Community Development permitting process.
  • Coordinates plans with developers and project reviews with other governing entities.
  • Scopes and reviews all reports, plans and studies prepared by consultants pertaining to private developments impacting county roads.
  • Reviews all roadway improvement plans to insure they comply with the County Road Standards.
  • Reviews plans to ensure all features such as curves, sidewalks, lighting and guardrail adhere to the road standards adopted by the Board of County Commissioners.
  • All public works and private developer projects are scrutinized for compliance.
  • Makes recommendations on technical deviation requests when necessary.
Requirements :
  • Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering and six years of engineering experience to include two years of supervisory/management experience; OR
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE) and two years of supervisory/management experience.
